Sanford Metal Bait Company - Doc's Menhaden
Sanford, Florida
c. 1940's - 1950's

An osteopath by profession, William "Doc" Gardiner designed his metal spoons for catching schooling bass from the St. Johns River. Painted examples indicate an obvious tie to Dick Porter and the Porter Bait Company of Daytona Beach, Florida (some 30 miles to the east). However, some collectors challenge this, contending Gardiner and his wife painted the lures themselves.
